Annual Conference 2014

Music, Place, and Community’

Hosted by Comhrá Ceoil and the Centre for Irish Studies, NUIG

21st – 23rd February, 2014 – St. Anthony’s, Cairnes Building, NUI Galway

Keynote address by Martin Stokes, King Edward Professor of Music, King’s College London

(sponsored by NUIG Millennium Forum)

We are very excited to be holding the ICTM Ireland Annual Conference in Galway for the first time this year, and hope to see many of you there. The call for papers this year drew the largest number of proposals that we’ve seen, and the conference will feature over forty papers from scholars working in Ireland, Europe, and beyond. The theme focuses on the resilience of connections between music, place and community, and the fact that music still ‘evokes and organizes collective memories and presents experiences of place with an intensity, power, and simplicity unmatched by any other social activity’ (Stokes1994).

Our keynote speaker will be Martin Stokes, King Edward Professor of Music at King’s College London, author of numerous books and articles that have been central to modern ethnomusicological thought, and recipient of the Dent Medal for 2010.

On Friday, all events are at An Taibhdhearc. Registration begins at 5pm followed by our Annual General Meeting (which all members are encouraged to attend) at 5:45. This will be followed by a welcome reception at 7pm and finally the Sean-nós concert at 7:30pm.

On Saturday and Sunday, all events will take place in the Cairnes Building, NUI Galway. Saturday evening will feature the keynote speech, the conference dinner at McCambridge’s, and much contagious merriment.
